Know the language before you pay
This digital marketing glossary defines 60 terms from paid ads, SEO, analytics, social media and branding, each in a short definition that stands on its own. Kazaplan wrote it for business owners in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, so you can read campaign reports, compare agency proposals and ask the right question before you spend.
ROAS, return on ad spend, is the revenue your ads generate divided by what you spent on them. Spending 1,000 to make 4,000 in sales is a ROAS of 4 to 1. It measures revenue, not profit, so always compare it with your margins and running costs before deciding whether a campaign is working.
CPC is the cost of one click; CPM is the cost of one thousand impressions, whether anyone clicks or not. CPC suits campaigns aimed at traffic or sales, while CPM suits awareness and reach campaigns. The two are linked: a cheap CPM with a weak click-through rate can still produce an expensive CPC.
SEO is improving your website so it appears in Google's free results when customers search for what you offer. It covers fixing the site's technical setup, writing content that matches what people search for, and earning links from trusted sites. Results come slower than ads but they do not stop when you stop paying.
Conversion rate is the percentage of visits that end in the action you want, such as a purchase, a quote request or a WhatsApp message. It is conversions divided by visits, times one hundred. If traffic is high but conversions are low, the problem is usually the landing page or the offer rather than the ad.
Retargeting means showing ads to people who already interacted with your business, such as website visitors or shoppers who left items in their cart. It works through a platform pixel or custom audience lists. It usually performs better than reaching new people, because these visitors already know you and only need a reminder or a reason to buy.
Reach is the number of unique people who saw a post or ad, while impressions count every time it was shown, including repeat views by the same person. Impressions are therefore always equal to or higher than reach. Dividing impressions by reach gives frequency, the average number of times each person saw your message.

Paid advertising terms
Cost Per Click, CPC
Cost per click is the average amount an advertiser pays for each click on an ad. It is total spend divided by clicks, and it rises or falls with competition for the audience or keyword and with ad quality.
Cost Per Mille, CPM
CPM, cost per mille, is what you pay for one thousand ad impressions, clicked or not. Advertisers use it to price reach, and it is the main cost figure in brand awareness campaigns.
Click-Through Rate, CTR
Out of everyone who saw your ad, how many clicked? That share is the click-through rate: clicks divided by impressions, times one hundred. A higher CTR usually means the message and creative fit the audience.
Cost Per Acquisition, CPA
Cost per acquisition is the average you pay for one action you actually want, such as a purchase or a lead form. Divide campaign spend by the number of those actions. It tells you more about profit than CPC, because it looks past the click.
Return On Ad Spend, ROAS
Return on ad spend compares the revenue your ads bring in with what you paid for them. Spend 1,000, sell 4,000, and your ROAS is 4 to 1. Keep in mind it measures revenue, not net profit.
Ad Auction
Platforms such as Google and Meta use an ad auction to decide which ad appears, who sees it and at what price. The highest bid does not win by itself. Ad quality and the expected user response count too.
Quality Score
Quality Score is a 1 to 10 rating Google gives each keyword in Search campaigns, based on expected CTR, ad relevance and landing page experience. Higher scores usually mean better positions at a lower cost per click.
Negative Keywords
Add negative keywords to a Google Ads campaign and your ad stops showing for searches that contain them, such as free or jobs. The payoff is simple: no money spent on clicks that were never going to buy.
Retargeting
With retargeting, your ads follow up with people who have already dealt with your business, like site visitors or shoppers who left something in the cart. It tends to outperform cold audiences, because these people already know you.
Custom Audience
A custom audience is a list built inside an ad platform from your own data, such as site visitors, people who engaged with your account, or a securely uploaded customer list. It is the base for retargeting and lookalikes.
Lookalike Audience
For a lookalike audience, the platform finds new people who resemble your current customers or site visitors. They have not met you yet, but they are more likely to care than a broad audience.
Frequency
How many times did the same person see your ad over a given period, on average? That number is frequency. Push it too high and people tire of the ad while costs climb. Keep it too low and the message may not stick.
Meta Pixel
The Meta Pixel is a small piece of code on a website or store. It records what a visitor does after clicking an ad: viewing a product, adding to cart, buying. Without it, Meta cannot tell which ad drove sales, or optimize toward them.
Conversions API
Through the Conversions API, your website or store server sends event data straight to Meta rather than relying on the browser alone. The result is less data lost to ad blockers and privacy limits in browsers and devices.
Daily Budget and Lifetime Budget
A daily budget is an average spending limit per day; a lifetime budget is one amount for the whole campaign that the platform spreads across its dates. On Google, spend on some days can exceed the daily budget while the month stays within the limit.
A/B Testing
An A/B test pits two versions of an ad or page against each other, changed in one element only, such as the headline or the image. Do not call it early. You need enough traffic and a fixed test period before the result means anything.
Performance Max
Performance Max is a Google Ads campaign type that runs your ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail and Maps from one campaign, with automated budget allocation. It needs accurate conversion tracking and strong creative to work well.
SEO terms
Search Engine Optimization, SEO
SEO, search engine optimization, is work on a website so it shows up in Google’s free (organic) results when people search for what it sells. It rests on three things: technical setup, content, and links from other sites.
Keyword
A keyword is the phrase someone types into a search engine, such as marketing agency in Cairo. Pick keywords from what your customers actually type, not from the name you gave your own service.
Search Intent
Every search has a purpose behind it: to learn something, reach a particular site, compare options or buy. That purpose is search intent. A page that misses it rarely ranks well, however good the writing.
Search Engine Results Page, SERP
The SERP is the page Google shows after a search. It mixes ads, organic results, map listings and sometimes direct answers or AI summaries. Its layout for a given keyword tells you what kind of content can appear there.
On-Page SEO
On-page SEO covers what sits on the page itself: the title, headings, body text, images and internal links. The aim is that Google grasps the topic clearly and the visitor finds the answer fast.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO is the work on a site’s technical setup so Google can crawl and index it easily. It covers speed, XML sitemaps, the robots.txt file, broken links and duplicate pages.
Backlinks
Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to yours, and Google reads them as a vote of trust. One link from a respected site in your field outweighs hundreds of weak ones. Paid links can actively hurt you.
Title Tag
The title tag is the page title shown as the blue link in search results and on the browser tab. It tells Google what the page is about, and it settles the searcher’s question: click or scroll on?
Meta Description
A meta description is a short summary of a page that often appears under the title in search results. It does not raise rankings directly, but it persuades searchers to click your result instead of another.
Indexing
Once Google has crawled a page, processed it and added it to its database, the page is indexed. A page that is not indexed cannot appear in search at all. You can check the status of each page in Google Search Console.
Core Web Vitals
Core Web Vitals are three Google metrics for user experience: how fast the main content loads (LCP), how quickly the page responds to interaction (INP), and how stable the layout stays while loading (CLS).
Local SEO
Searches like restaurant near me or dentist in Nasr City are tied to a place, and local SEO is how you show up in them and in Google Maps. It depends on your Google Business Profile, reviews, and the same name, address and phone everywhere they appear.
Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is a free listing that shows your business on Google Maps and in search, with address, phone, opening hours, photos and reviews. It is often the first thing a local searcher sees, before the website.
Schema Markup
Schema markup is code added to a page that spells out what the content means for search engines, for example: this is a product at this price, or these are questions and answers. The result is clearer understanding and a chance at richer results.
Featured Snippet
A featured snippet is the answer box Google sometimes places above the results, quoting part of a page that answers the query directly. Google tends to pick short paragraphs that open with the answer.
Answer Engine Optimization, AEO
Answer engine optimization is writing and structuring content so AI assistants and answer tools, such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT, can quote it. It relies on direct answers, clear definitions and structured data.
Analytics and measurement terms
Key Performance Indicator, KPI
A key performance indicator is one specific number you judge progress by, such as monthly orders or cost per lead. A good KPI is tied to a business outcome. Follower count looks nice on a slide, but it rarely qualifies.
Conversion
A conversion is the action you want from a visitor: a purchase, a form, a call, a WhatsApp chat. Until conversions are defined precisely, ads cannot be optimized and reports cannot be read.
Conversion Rate
Conversion rate is the percentage of visits or clicks that end in a conversion: conversions divided by visits, times one hundred. It usually reveals the strength of the landing page and of the offer itself.
Attribution Model
A customer might see an ad, then search on Google, then send a message before buying. An attribution model is the rule your measurement tool uses to split credit for that sale across those steps. It is the main reason platforms report different sales numbers.
UTM Parameters
UTM parameters are short tags on the end of a link that tell your analytics tool where a visit came from, by which medium, and from which campaign. Skip them and traffic from different campaigns blurs into one.
Google Analytics 4, GA4
Google Analytics 4 is Google’s current free tool for website and app analytics. It is built around events rather than page views alone, and lets you mark key events that represent your business goals.
Engagement Rate
Engagement rate means two different things. In GA4, it is the share of sessions that lasted over 10 seconds, included a key event, or had at least two page views. On social media, it is likes, comments and shares relative to reach or followers.
Bounce Rate
In GA4, bounce rate is the share of sessions that were not engaged, the inverse of engagement rate. A high bounce rate on a landing page usually means the message, page speed or offer does not match what the visitor expected.
Customer Acquisition Cost, CAC
Take everything spent on marketing and sales over a period and divide it by the new customers won in that period. The result is customer acquisition cost. Unlike CPA, it counts all costs, not only ad spend.
Customer Lifetime Value, LTV
Customer lifetime value is the total revenue or profit you expect from a customer over the whole relationship. Set it next to acquisition cost and you know the most you can pay for a new customer without losing money.
Sales Funnel
A sales funnel is the route a customer takes from first hearing about you, to interest, to comparing, to buying. Each stage needs its own message, ads and measure of success. So an awareness campaign should not be judged on sales alone.
Reach and Impressions
Reach counts the unique people who saw a piece of content. Impressions count every time it was shown, repeats included. Impressions can therefore never be lower than reach.
Social media terms
Organic Reach
Organic reach is the number of people who see a post without paid promotion. It depends on audience engagement and each platform’s algorithm, which is why most businesses support it with paid ads.
Content Calendar
A content calendar is a monthly schedule that answers four questions for each post: what, where, when and why. It ends random posting and leaves room for design and approvals before each date.
Influencer Marketing
In influencer marketing, you work with a creator whose audience trusts them to promote your product or service. In Saudi Arabia, influencers who publish paid ads need a Mawthooq license, so check it before you sign.
User-Generated Content, UGC
User-generated content is photos, videos and reviews about a product made by customers or creators in a natural style. It feels closer to real experience than a polished ad, which is why it is common in TikTok and Snapchat ads.
Community Management
Community management means answering comments and messages and looking after what is said about a brand on its social pages. A quick, polite reply can sell more than the post that prompted it.
Short-Form Video
Instagram Reels, TikTok videos and Snapchat Spotlight are all short-form video: brief vertical clips. The format currently tends to earn the most organic reach, and its first seconds decide whether people keep watching or swipe.
Content and brand terms
Visual Identity
Visual identity is what makes a brand recognizable to the eye: logo, colors, typefaces, photo style and layout. Used consistently, it lets customers spot you before they read your name.
Brand Positioning
Brand positioning is the place you want to hold in a customer’s mind compared with competitors. It answers plain questions: who is this for, how is it different, and why believe it? Every later marketing message builds on it.
Tone of Voice
Tone of voice is the consistent way a brand speaks in every post, reply and ad, formal or friendly, brief or detailed. It keeps the brand recognizable even when the person writing changes.
Value Proposition
A value proposition is a short statement of what a customer gains from you specifically, and why they should pick you over the alternatives. Test it: can you say it in two sentences? If not, the rest of your marketing will come out muddled.
Buyer Persona
A buyer persona is a detailed profile of a typical customer based on real data: age, job, problem, what stops them buying and where they spend time online. It guides the choice of messages, platforms and offers.
Copywriting
Copywriting is text written to get the reader to do one thing: buy, sign up, get in touch. Unlike article writing, it is judged by what happens next, not by length or style.
Landing Page
A landing page is a page built for a single goal that visitors reach from an ad or link, such as requesting a quote or booking. The fewer distractions it has, the higher its conversion rate tends to be.
Call to Action, CTA
Request a quote, message us on WhatsApp: these are calls to action, the phrase or button that tells a visitor what to do next. Give each page and ad one clear call to action, not several that compete.
Content Marketing
Content marketing wins customers with content that genuinely answers their questions, from articles and guides to videos, instead of leaning on ads alone. It works slower than ads, but the results accumulate and do not vanish when spending stops.
How to use these terms with your agency
Before you sign with any agency, put three questions to it using these terms. Which KPIs will you be judged on? How will conversions be tracked? Where does your fee end and the ad budget begin? Written answers tell you a lot. Read our FAQ or contact us directly.
